EDUC 633-B01 Module 1 Introduction - Roger Gray

Hello - I look forward to our next eight weeks together!

Below is my introduction video;

Transcript;

Hello,
My name is Roger Gray.  I have always used my middle name, Alan, but will use Roger for class in order to match my screen name and to make things easier.  This will also be an honor in respect to my father, Roger, who is one of my biggest supporters in this project to earn my Master of Education degree from Liberty University.
I am currently in the second half of my program for a Masters in Educational Technology and Online Instruction.  I earned my Masters in Administrative Leadership and Policy Studies from the University of Colorado in 2009, and have never been an online student before this.  After two years of prayer and investigation the Lord led me to this program at this time.  I said after finishing my master’s at CU that I was done with my education, but God had other plans and here I am – He has such a sense of humor! Right?
As the journey has progressed, I have become increasingly aware of the blessings in His guidance.  I don’t know what the Lord has planned for me, though I can see that He is leading the journey.  The scripture that is currently guiding me most on this path is Hebrews 11:8, “by faith Abraham obeyed when he was called to go out to a place that he was to receive as an inheritance.  And he went out, not knowing where he was going” from the English Standard Version.
I am a fifth grade classroom teacher with an additional license in administration and job responsibilities as an assistant principal. Because of the passion for my work in the classroom I plan to always remain there as my focus.   During my 24 years in teaching, I have seen huge changes and am excited to be learning more about current technology and pedagogy for it’s application in education.
 I live in a small, rural town at the base of the Rocky Mountains in northern Colorado with my wife and our dog, Junior.  We live very close to our large family and are blessed to get to spend a great deal of time together.  Some of my favorite activities are enjoying frequent large family meals of 15-35 people, as well as the Colorado classics - skiing, biking, hiking, and horseback riding.
            I look forward to sharing the journey ahead with you for the next eight weeks.
            My three statements for you are;
-       I recently learned Spanish.
-       I love playing the piano.
-       I’ve spent a lot of time in Mayan villages.

Which one do you think is false?

    1. I'm sorry! I noticed that when checking from a different computer this morning to verify that it worked :/ I believe I have it fixed now. The video gets choppy towards the end and I have been researching why. I tried many takes and several suggested solutions, but am getting the same result. I have used photo booth video for one previous class and this did not occur. I'll update the video as soon as I can find a solution.

    1. Thank you Dr. Courduff, I'm happy that this is working now! This is my first experience with blogging, I will keep working out the kinks. I don't play the piano, but often wish I could. :)

  3. Nice to meet you Roger. I'm going to say the statement that is false is spending time in Mayan villages. I lived in Colorado Springs for 5 years while my dad was stationed at the Air Force Academy. I still have family in the Denver area. I hope to visit them soon! Again, it's nice to meet you!

    1. It's nice to meet you as well Dayna. I love the Colorado Springs area, it's very special. We live about 30 minutes North of Denver and my wife and I love to stop in at the Larimer Market for cake and coffee. It would be fun if you ever want to meet us there when you visit. I actually have spent a lot of time in Mayan villages.

  4. Hi Roger,
    It is so nice to meet you! First, congratulations on trying something new! Most people would not have as positive of an attitude as you have about trying online courses and making a "vlog"- so kudos to you! I hope you find it beneficial and enriching!

    I love that you are classroom teacher yet have an administrative background- that will provide such a unique perspective throughout this course. I am thinking of getting my principal's certification after finishing this Master's, but like you mentioned, God's got a sense of humor!

    I'm going to say that you haven't recently learned Spanish? But if you have, that's great because I'm actual fluent in Spanish as well and we could practice together!

    I can't wait to work with you throughout this course and learn together.
    All the best,
    Lisa Peters

    1. Thank you Lisa! This adventure is certainly challenging, but exciting. I would be happy to talk to you about the administrative path anytime. I highly recommend adding it to your education, though it sounds like God has your plate quite full at this time. Do you know where He is preparing you to go?

      I have actually been learning Spanish over the past five years - It's amazing how motivating love is. My wife is from Mexico City and our first date was mostly sign language and Google Translate. It would be fun to practice in an academic setting.

  5. Roger,
    You have got so many things to bring to this class. God has directed you in the right direction, I look forward to working along with you. You have been on both sides of the fence so you know what the teachers need. I think you have not recently learned Spanish

    1. Thank you Theresa! I do find that working in the classroom and the front office improves the perspective in both areas. For years I have said that it would wonderful if all teachers could spend a week working with administration, I think it would be beneficial to all involved. I look forward to working with you as well.

      I have been learning Spanish for just the past five years. Love is an amazing motivator. My wife is from Mexico City and our first date was three hours of sign language and Google Translate.
